Feb. 22 (Bloomberg) — A Sudanese student activist entered the 11th day of a hunger strike to protest his arrest without charge after he participated in a protest at the University of Khartoum, his lawyer and a family member said.

Taj Alsir Jaafar, 25, a member of a youth movement known as Girifna, or “we’re fed up,” was arrested on Dec. 30 after participating in a university protest in support of people displaced by the Merowe Dam, north of Khartoum, said his lawyer, Abdul Moneam Adam. London-based Amnesty International urged Sudan on Jan. 24 to release Jaafa, saying he’s “at risk of torture or other ill-treatment.”

After reports appeared on Sudanese websites that Jaafar had died inside Kober prison, his mother and Amani Ali, a cousin, went to the National Security and Intelligence Service headquarters in Khartoum. While they were told the news was false, they weren’t allowed to see him, Ali said.

The teammates also hope to see an outpouring of blanket donations for Patty Tebon’s passionate ministry to Swaziland as well.

The Strivers are collecting fleece blankets now until Saturday’s home meet — and have gotten off to a great start, having filled two barrels with blankets so far.

“Patty has made an incredible impact on that community and the Strivers thought it would be great to help her out,” said Nikki Pollman, the Y’s director of gymnastics.

The collection drive idea started six months ago with Pollman’s search for a good home for two large suitcases she no longer needed nor wanted. A friend suggested bringing them to Papa Murphy’s, where Patty Tebon works.

Tebon uses the large suitcases given to her to transport thousands of blankets via mission team members on her annual trip to Swaziland. Pollman remembers that she found Tebon making pizzas, asked a few questions, took some information with her, and
Read more: http://www.doorcountyadvocate.com/article/20120222/ADV01/202220447/Strivers-gymnasts-collect-blankets-Swaziland

BG Chairman Robert Wilson is quoted as having told Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete that Tanzania has to prepare its economy to handle such an amount of money.

“We are planning to invest between $10 billion and $20 billion in second half of this decade in gas and the Tanzanian economy,” Wilson is quoted as saying.

BG has discovered huge reserves of natural gas in three wells, including a deepwater one, in the Indian Ocean, the daily says.

The firm has invested $500 million in gas exploration in the country last year and it will invest the same amount this year, Wilson said.

Wilson called on the government to join efforts to counter challenges in exploration and production of gas in the Indian Ocean, especially in dealing with pirates originating from Somalia, the daily says.

As the Harambee Stars await a bumper sponsorship deal from East African Breweries Limited to be launched on Tuesday evening, their opponents in the preliminary round of the Africa Cup of Nations 2013 qualifiers Togo named their provisional squad for the February 29 game, with Emmanuel Adebayor top of the list.

Media reports say Togo coach Didier Six expects in-form Adebayor who plays for English Premier League high performers, Tottenham Hotspur, to be fit in time to make a return to the national football squad almost a year after he quit international football.

Friendly unclear

Kenya, meanwhile, are also training under coach Francis Kimanzi who will next week whittle down the squad with the expected arrival of the foreign-based players.

A friendly against Egypt remains unclear if it will be played but Kimanzi said he is concentrating more in the Togo game because it’s the one that counts.

Harambee Stars players started streaming back to the national team cap yesterday after the weekend league action.

No injuries have been reported in the squad.

The first leg of the qualifiers will be played in Nairobi next Wednesday.

Esperance star Oussama Darragi is set to move to Swiss club FC Sion.

The Tunisian international, who played a key role in his club’s African Champions League success, will join on a four-year contract, Sion say.

Darragi helped Tunisia win the CHAN, the African tournament for locally-based players, and reach the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Darragi’s contract with Esperance ends in June and the club will get nothing from the deal.

Officials and fans have reacted with anger to the move, the BBC’s Mourad Teyeb reports from Tunis.

When he does join them, Darragi is likely to be playing in the Swiss second division.

Sion are facing relegation from the Swiss top flight, after being hit with a 36-point deduction for breaking a transfer embargo.

It is the latest step in a saga which began in 2008, when football’s world governing body Fifa ruled that the club had been guilty of
Read more: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17128803

Petrodar is a consortium of oil firms operating in South Sudan that includes the national oil corporations of China and Malaysia. Petrodar did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Liu’s ouster comes in the midst of the company’s relocation of its headquarters from Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, to Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

South Sudan for months has accused its northern neighbor of stealing its oil, and southern officials now say Liu was in on the thefts. Barnaba Benjamin Marial, South Sudan’s minister of information, said that a government investigation found that he was involved with the government of Sudan “in the conspiracy of getting the oil of South Sudan.”

South Sudan declared independence from Sudan in July, and in the process inherited nearly three-quarters of Sudan’s oil production. But all oil produced in the south must be exported through two pipelines in Sudan.

In addition to operating oil fields in South Sudan, Petrodar is responsible for the maintenance and operation of one of the two pipelines.

South Sudan in January ordered the shutdown of its oil production after Sudan announced
Read more: http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle-east/south-sudan-accuses-president-of-oil-company-of-colluding-with-sudan-expels-him-from-country/2012/02/22/gIQA9m4xSR_story.html

The acquisition will give the Premier Foods, which is known for brands such as Iwisa maize meal, Snowflake flour and Blue Ribbon bread a major foothold in the market as the two businesses it is buying command a 75% share of Swaziland’s bread market when combined.

In addition to gaining ownership of the leading Swazi bread brand, Supreme, Premier Foods also intends to introduce the Blue Ribbon brand, which is the company’s biggest bread brand in South Africa.

“These acquisitions fit perfectly with our investment criteria and we look forward to working closely with the management team to develop high quality but affordable products for the Swazi market,” said Premier Foods group CEO Ian Visser in a statement this week.

Tanzania needs to borrow the ‘two self promoting virtuous circles of growth’ page from countries that have successfully carried out the paradigm if she wants to win the ongoing economic transition.

A statement issued by the World Bank in Dar es Salaam yesterday ahead of today’s launch of the first Tanzania Economic Update said lessons from Malaysia, Chile or Mauritius on the creation of the “two self promoting virtuous circles of growth” would be pertinent to her transformation.

The first circle of growth, according to the statement involves better education and skill improvement capable of leading to higher labour productivity, it said.

This would translate to job creation, new income and new investment in human capital, it added.

It said the second circle involves support to small and dynamic firms to make them become more competitive while generating higher revenues.

It said that the additional revenue would then be reinvested for business development and innovation.

Beyond fiscal prudence, the statement said, the World Bank’s Economic Update argues that Tanzania should get inspired by the success of other emerging countries.

Besides those areas, the round table discussion will
Read more: http://www.ippmedia.com/frontend/index.php?l=38739

After returning to training sessions on Tuesday, Tottenham injured striker Emmanuel Adebayor has announced that he will be available for Sunday’s match against former club Arsenal as his rehabilitation program is progressing well.

The 27-year-old hitman was doubtful for the anticipated game with the Gunners after picking a knee injury in the club’s trainings, but it seems he will be ready for the trip to the Emirates stadium.

“Just finished training, really happy with the progress, knee is looking much better. Working on my fitness for Sunday,” the former Monaco player, who scored last week against Newcastle to end his 713 minute Premier League goal drought, wrote on Twitter.

The Togolese striker arrived at Tottenham last summer on a season-long loan from Manchester City.
